About This Watch

By 1929, La Chaux-de-Fonds had been making watches for over a century, but the late 1920s brought something the Swiss workshops had not encountered before: American taste at full volume. The New York market wanted watches that looked like the buildings going up on Park Avenue, that carried the same geometric confidence as the decorative ironwork on a Manhattan elevator door, that felt like objects belonging to a new world rather than an old one. Prohibition was in full swing, speakeasies were packed, and the people spending their evenings in those rooms dressed accordingly. The Winton Watch Company, incorporated in La Chaux-de-Fonds in April 1927 and distributing through New York, was built precisely to meet that demand. This is the kind of watch that was on someone's wrist in those rooms.

What Winton produced here is an articulated case, hinged on both sides, designed to flex and conform to the curve of the wrist rather than sitting rigidly against it. This was a technically deliberate choice, and a relatively uncommon one, reflecting an understanding that comfort and elegance were not separate concerns. The case is covered in hand-chased geometric engraving, with a fine bead-cut channel running along the top and bottom bars, a repeating diamond-cut pattern across the mid-section, and elaborately worked corner lugs with foliate fan motifs that terminate in the strap attachment points. Every surface carries decoration. It is the visual language of the era rendered in miniature, closer in spirit to the ornamental ironwork of a Manhattan skyscraper than to anything that came before or after it in watchmaking.

The dial is white with large, bold Art Deco Arabic numerals outlined in black, giving them a graphic weight that reads clearly and looks nothing like the refined numerals of earlier dress watches. A small seconds subdial sits at six o'clock within a decorative printed border. The blued steel hands are slender and precise. The hands and numerals appear to have been relumed at some point, most likely to replace the original radium lume, a common and sensible update on watches of this era. There was a crack/inclusion in the crystal near six o'clock, I replaced it with a new old stock crystal after I took these pictures. So it no longer exists.

The movement is signed Winton W. Co, Swiss, fifteen jewels, two adjustments. Two adjustments indicates the movement was regulated for positional accuracy beyond the basic standard, a specification that placed it above entry-level production and reflected the quality expectations Winton held for their Swiss suppliers. The caseback is stamped 14K Gold Filled and signed Winton in script. The watch is fitted on a period-appropriate tan leather strap that suits the scale and tone of the case.

This is a watch from a very specific and very brief window in horological history, when the wristwatch was new enough that its designers still felt free to reinvent it entirely, and when the decorative vocabulary of Art Deco was at its most confident and original. The articulated case construction places it in a narrow and genuinely scarce category, and pieces presenting this well from this period are not easily found. Case dimensions are 25.55mm wide excluding the crown, 31.7mm tall excluding the lugs, and 36.8mm tall including the lugs, making it a particularly large example for the period.
