Westfield Art Deco Curved Rectangular Watch - Original Box - Circa 1937

By the middle of the 1930s, wristwatch design had begun to take advantage of something a pocket watch never could: the shape of the wrist itself. Cases stretched into long rectangles, crystals arched from end to end, and dials were drawn around narrow geometries that seemed almost architectural. This Westfield comes from that moment. Its case follows a gentle curve from lug to lug, with broad polished ends framing a dial that seems to continue the same line.

Westfield was already part of Bulova’s corporate structure by 1931, and in 1937 Bulova was using its familiar radio time-signal advertising for the Westfield line as well. Behind the smaller name was a serious branch of one of America’s largest watch companies. Inside this example is Westfield’s hand-wound caliber 6AW, a 17-jewel movement stamped WESTFIELD 17 JEWELS USA and shaped to disappear inside the narrow rectangular case.

The original dial has aged to a warm ivory with fine spotting across its surface. Raised gold Arabic numerals crowd the perimeter in distinctly Deco fashion, leaving the small WESTFIELD signature almost alone in the center. A black geometric minute track follows the edge beneath matching gold hands. Above it sits the original deeply curved crystal, which has developed fine internal crystalline crazing visible from certain angles. These are not through-cracks, but age within the material itself.

The 10K rolled-gold-plate case still carries the design particularly well. Viewed from the side, the entire watch arcs toward the wrist, while the stepped case walls and projecting ends give it considerably more presence than the narrow dial suggests from directly above. There are light scratches and wear consistent with age, including some plating wear through around the edges and lug areas. The brown leather strap shown also carries age and creasing. The watch runs, and its service history is unknown.

Its original presentation box has survived with it. Red velvet surrounds a black base, while the aged satin lining still reads WESTFIELD, “Shock-Proof,” and “Made by WESTFIELD WATCH COMPANY.” The box shows the expected wear and staining of its age, but nearly ninety years later the same name remains on the dial, case, movement, and the box in which the watch was sold.
