Buy in Person — Los AngelesAbout This Watch
Produced in 1899, at the peak of American industrial confidence, this open face pocket watch carries one of the finest movements Waltham ever put into civilian hands. The Riverside was the movement Waltham built for the man who expected precision without needing to explain why, 19 jewels on fully damascened nickel plates, adjusted across multiple positions before it ever left the factory floor in Massachusetts, and signed with a clarity that leaves no ambiguity about what it is: A.W.W.CO. / Waltham, Mass. / Riverside / Adjusted, serial 14027384. The white enamel dial carries the Waltham signature below the twelve, black Arabic numerals with red secondary numbering on the chapter ring, blued steel hands, and a subsidiary seconds register at six. The enamel has aged with light spotting that a hundred and twenty-five years puts on a surface that has never been touched up. The gold filled Crescent Watch Case Co. case is smooth in the hand, the outer back engraved with the monogram R.L.W.
America was between wars and accelerating. The Spanish-American War had ended the year before, the country had emerged from it with territories stretching into the Pacific and Caribbean, and the industrial economy was expanding in every direction. The railroads were at the peak of their influence, and the precision standards they imposed on American watchmakers had pushed the industry into genuine competition with Switzerland. The men who owned and operated that world carried pocket watches, and what they carried said something about them.
Among collectors of American horology, the Waltham Riverside holds a specific and consistent reputation. It sat near the top of Waltham's civilian production, below only the dedicated railroad grades, and the adjusted designation was not a marketing claim. It meant the movement had been individually regulated across positions on the factory floor, a labor-intensive step that cost time and produced a watch a serious owner could depend on. Waltham had been refining this work since 1850, and by 1899 the damascening, jeweling, and finishing visible in the movement photographs here represents that tradition at full maturity.
The case is stamped C.W.C.CO. with the Crescent Watch Case Co. trade mark and case serial 1757556. The watch is running well. The monogram R.L.W. on the outer back is the only record of whoever first put this in their pocket.
