Vostok Amphibia Albatros - First-Series Radio Room - Made in USSR - 1990

Mikhail Novikov and Vera Belova were handed a problem in the mid sixties. The Soviet Ministry of Defense wanted a watch that would survive two hundred meters, and every foreign way of building one was already patented. So they built it backwards. The crystal is three millimeters of lucite. Under pressure it bends inward about half a millimeter and seats itself harder the deeper it goes. The back is a bayonet fitting over a wide sintered gasket, squeezed instead of sheared. The factory ran a contest to name the thing, and the staff chose Amphibia, after the animal that is at home either way.

The dial is not laid out like a diver's. Four colored wedges run out from the center, pink at twelve and six, red at three and nine. They come from a ship's radio room. After the Titanic, ships agreed to stop transmitting four times an hour and just listen, so that a distress call from anywhere had a chance of being heard. On 500 kilocycles, the Morse distress frequency, the silence ran from fifteen to eighteen and from forty-five to forty-eight minutes past. When voice distress moved to 2182 kilocycles in the fifties it took the first three minutes of the hour and of the half hour. Radio room clocks painted those six minutes so an operator could find them without reading the dial.

Albatros runs in white Cyrillic script under the twelve, with the jewel count beneath it and a small white anchor above the six. The hours are white numerals except at the quarters, where plain blocks stand in. Lume dots ring the outer track and have aged to cream. Made in USSR runs along the bottom. The country had less than two years left.

The case is octagonal steel and the bezel is cut into teeth the whole way around. Red paint covers the last fifteen minutes of it, and black fills the valleys between the teeth. Both have worn, with dirt and light corrosion sitting down in the cuts. There are scratches across the case flanks. The back is stamped waterproof to two hundred meters in Cyrillic, with the Amphibia block logo, the number 365033, and shockproof along the bottom.

The crown is part of the same design. It screws down, and inside it a clutch lets the crown decouple from the stem, so it can collapse into the case as it tightens. Unscrewed, it feels deliberately loose rather than snapping between positions. The winding position sits in a vague zone between screwed down and time set, and finding it takes a little familiarity. That looseness is the clutch doing its job, not a stripped thread or a worn stem.

The movement is the 2409, hand wound. The bridge is lettered SEVENTEEN JEWELS and MADE IN USSR, in red and in English, under a dial that is entirely Cyrillic. Three things mark it as the first series: the jewel count printed on the dial, the octagonal case, and that red English lettering. Vostok dropped the jewel count for its own logo on the ones that came after. The watch runs, and its service history is unknown.
