About This Watch

Offered here is a finely made pocket watch most likely produced in France or the Jura-Swiss region around 1885–1905, when the Third Republic revived Revolutionary symbols in public life and commemorated the 1789 Centennial. The silver-tone case presents an exquisite engraved tableau: two clasped hands holding a liberty pole topped with a Phrygian cap, framed by a laurel wreath, rising sun, cannons, flags, and spears. The presence of military symbols like cannons and spears points to the armed struggle for these ideals, which was a defining feature of the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic era that followed. The rising sun motif also aligns with the dawn of a new republic or empire. In the late 19th century these emblems signaled civic unity and republican identity, exactly the message promoted during the Centennial and the 1900 Exposition.

Inside, the watch houses a Swiss bridge-style movement typical of Jura and Besançon workshops of the late 19th century, representing the transitional phase in watchmaking history. The watch is stem-wound and stem-set via the crown at 12 o’clock, requiring no key. It winds, sets, and runs smoothly, keeping reliable time for its age.

The dial is a fine hand-painted white enamel example, featuring Roman numerals for the hours, red Arabic numerals for the minutes, a sub-seconds register at 6 o’clock, and a charming floral garland motif at the center. The original cathedral-style hands remain intact, completing a composition that reflects both the mechanical and artistic sophistication of early 19th-century horology.
