Seiko Automatic 7006-7119 - Gold Tone Day-Date - Charcoal Dial - 1972

By the early 1970s, Seiko no longer needed to imitate anyone. The watches coming out of Japan had taken on their own shape: automatic movements, sharp case lines, bold dial furniture, and day-date windows made for daily life rather than ceremony. They were practical watches, but they did not look plain. They looked like the decade that made them.

The watch here is from that world, a Seiko 7006-series automatic with a gold-tone case, dark sunburst dial, faceted acrylic crystal, and day-date window at three. The caseback is stamped 7006-7119, Base Metal Top, Stainless Steel Back, Water Resistant, Japan E, with a serial number that points to July 1972.

The dial is a deep charcoal sunburst, almost black at the edge and warmer toward the center when the light catches it. Gold and white block markers sit high on the surface, matched by wide gold hands with luminous centers. The day and date sit inside a gold frame at three, and 17 Jewels is printed above the small lightning-style mark at six. The minute track remains fine and simple around the outer edge, giving the dial its last bit of precision against the heavier case.

Inside is Seiko’s 7006A automatic movement. The photographed rotor is marked Twenty-One Jewels, while the dial is marked 17 Jewels; I am presenting both markings exactly as shown. The movement has the brushed Seiko finish visible beneath the back, with the automatic rotor signed Seiko Time Corp. The watch runs, and its service history is unknown.

The case is gold tone over base metal, with a stainless steel back. Its shape is broad and low, with faceted sides, hooded lugs, and a tall acrylic crystal that rises above the dial. The case shows scratches, plating wear, small nicks, and age throughout, especially along the edges and high points. The caseback shows scratches and tool marks from prior openings.

It comes on a gold-tone Speidel USA expansion bracelet, not original to the watch but very much in the period spirit. The bracelet has visible wear to the finish, with the Speidel USA signature repeated across the links.
