Buy in Person — Los AngelesAbout This Watch
Offered here is a Roamer Swiss wristwatch dating to the early years of World War II, 1942 to 1944, a period when wristwatches were no longer decorative accessories but everyday tools. This was the era of rationing, blackout curtains, and long workdays, when reliability and legibility mattered more than ornament. Watches like this were built to be worn continuously, often by civilians working in industrial, transport, or administrative roles tied indirectly to the war effort.
The watch features an original salmon dial, a configuration that is uncommon and increasingly sought after compared to the far more typical silver or white dials of the period. The warmth is part of what makes these early Roamers so compelling, especially when paired with radium-filled Arabic numerals and matching hands that have aged into a soft, matte tone consistent with wartime lume.
Inside is a manual-wind Roamer movement, correct for the period and representative of the brand's wartime production. Roamer, formally Meyer and Stüdeli, had built a reputation by this time for durable, no-nonsense movements intended for long service rather than novelty. The movement winds, sets, and runs.
The stainless steel case is compact and utilitarian, with proportions typical of early 1940s Swiss watches. It has unique period-correct long, straight lugs, a common design choice before postwar case expansion. The caseback is marked All Stainless Steel / Water Resistant / Antimagnetic, language frequently seen on wartime-era watches as manufacturers responded to real-world environmental concerns rather than marketing trends. Case wear is honest and consistent with age, with no attempt made to erase its history. The watch is fitted on a black NATO strap that suits the era and reinforces its tool-watch character without trying to modernize the presentation.
This is not a dress watch pretending to be military, nor a reenactment piece assembled decades later. It is a genuine wartime-era Swiss wristwatch that reflects how people actually lived and worked during the early 1940s. Its appeal lies in restraint, legibility, and survival, not decoration.
