Buy in Person — Los AngelesAbout This Watch
Pierce is not a name that turns up often in conversations about serious Swiss manufacturers, which is a genuine oversight. Founded in 1883 in Biel by the Lévy brothers under the full name Léon Lévy Frères Manufactures des Montres et Chronographes Pierce SA, the company grew to employ 1,500 people by 1910. Pierce was one of the only Swiss houses that refused to join the Ebauches SA consortium, choosing independence at considerable cost. Blacklisted from the supplier network, they had no choice but to develop their own movements entirely, producing more than thirty distinct calibres over the company's history. The Royal Air Force contracted them for pilot's watch development. They pioneered an early automatic winding system and a screw-back waterproof case before either was common practice. Pierce earned its reputation the hard way.
By the mid-1950s, prosperity had returned and watchmakers turned their attention to the wrist as a stage for something more celebratory. The cocktail watch demanded a dial that read less like an instrument and more like jewelry. Most houses answered that with applied gilt indices, maybe a few accent stones at twelve. Pierce went considerably further. The dial on this watch is not something you encounter often. Every hour position carries a diamond except for one that is missing, alternating between baguette cut stones set in rectangular bezels and round brilliant stones set in circular collets, each one raised individually from the dial surface so the entire field has sculptural depth. At certain angles the stones catch light independently of one another, creating a shifting, animated quality that photographs cannot fully capture. It is a bold and specific design choice, far removed from the restrained minimalism that dominated dress watches of the period, and it holds up entirely on its own terms.
The movement is signed Pierce Watch Co Inc, seventeen jewels, Swiss, a correctly specified and properly finished calibre consistent with Pierce's in-house standards. The case is gold filled with a stainless steel back, with swept lugs characteristic of mid-decade dress watch proportions. The caseback is stamped Pierce Watch Co Inc / Swiss on the inner surface.
The watch runs but would benefit from a service. The dial presents with appropriate patina consistent with seventy years of honest existence, and the overall configuration, diamond indices, gold case, and red accent hands, is intact and correct.
