Buy in Person — Los AngelesAbout This Watch
The case on this Orvin is more interesting than most ladies' watches of the period. The sculptural hooded lug construction stacks in two tiers on each side, giving the round case an almost architectural presence that was well beyond what the average mid-century dress watch attempted. The cream dial carries gold Arabic numerals and a pair of blued steel leaf hands with original intact lume, and a red seconds hand that adds a quiet dash of color at center. The watch comes on its original gold-toned diagonal pill-link bracelet, the polished oval links catching light cleanly and wearing with a heaviness that feels correct for the era.
Orvin was founded in 1941 in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, and built its reputation supplying 17-jewel Swiss movements to the American market exclusively through Sears Roebuck, which registered the Orvin trademark in 1951. The movements came from respected Swiss houses including Cortebert and A. Schild. Incabloc, the Swiss shock protection system introduced in the 1940s, remains the standard by which most modern Swiss movements are still protected today, and its presence here is the mark of a watch built to a real quality specification. The watch is running.
