Omega Jumbo - 2482-1 - Rose Gold - Bumper Automatic - Circa 1950

In the summer of 1948 London held the first Olympic Games in twelve years. The city was still on rations and still carried its bomb damage, the athletes slept in army camps and college rooms, and Wembley filled all the same. The torch came into the stadium past eighty thousand people, and down on the track, at the finish lines, the timekeepers worked with stopwatches sent from Switzerland. The name on those stopwatches was Omega.

The Omega here left the company about two years after those Games. Collectors call the reference the Jumbo. It is stamped 2482-1 inside the caseback, its case cut far larger than the dress watches of its day and plated thick in rose gold, the depth of the plate struck inside the back. It winds itself from the swing of the arm that wears it, and Automatic is printed on the dial to say so.

The dial is silvered in two tones, a center panel inside a brighter ring. An applied gold 12 stands at the top, applied gold darts mark the other hours, and Omega Automatic sits in black beneath the 12. The seconds keep their own register at six, cut in fine circles. The hands are gold, broad and tapered. Staining has spread across the right side of the dial in gray mottled patches, a pale ring has settled into the seconds register, and small dark specks scatter the surface. The photographs show all of it plainly.

The movement is the caliber 332, seventeen jewels, finished in rose. Its winding weight swings through an arc between two springs, tapping one at each end of its travel, and on a hard swing of the arm the tap comes faintly through the caseback. For a decade every automatic Omega made wound this way. The serial 12568349 dates it to about 1950.

The case is round with a smooth polished bezel, and short faceted horns carry the strap at the top and the bottom. A domed crystal stands over the dial with light scratches. The back is plain rose metal, covered in fine scratches, with one small pale spot near its upper edge. The crown is a smooth gold dome. The strap is newer black leather and is not original to the watch.

The watch runs, and its service history is unknown.
