About This Watch

By 1974 the world was alive with color, building were being built plated in bronze glass, and at sunset they burned the color of whiskey. Cars left Detroit with tinted windshields, sunglasses turned amber and gold, and living rooms were paneled in walnut. This watch Omega shipped from Bienne in 1974 was inspired by the colors of the 70's. Its case squared with the soft corners of the decade's television screens, brushed vertically across the top, polished along the sides, and plated in gold.

This watch carries a special configuration and dial for the reference. Most 166.0188 have a gold, cream, or silvered dial with a steel case.  This watches dial burns gold at the center and deepens through tobacco to near black with a deep sunburst that shifts as the light crosses it. Applied gold batons ride over it with small dots of lume at their tips, matching gold hands carry slim lume lines, and the day and the date are contained in a framed window at three. The gradient is even all the way around, free of the blotching these smoked dials usually suffer.

Inside is the caliber 1020 in great condition, the modern automatic Omega had just introduced, with a quickset for both the day and the date, this example in the seventeen-jewel execution made for America. Its rose-toned plates still hold their color.

The case is in good condition, the brushing crisp, the edges sharp, with only very minor plating loss in a few areas. The crown is Omega's own, signed with its mark. It comes on a black lizard strap. The watch runs, and its service history is unknown.
