About This Watch

Lord Elgin was the company's flagship line, and this example shows why. The case is the first thing that earns attention: a ribbed, triple-stepped mid-section with long tapered lugs in 10K gold fill, an architectural form that carries more visual weight than most dress watches of the period attempt. It is the kind of case design that shaped by the postwar moment, when servicemen returning home moved away from rugged field pieces toward refined, slim profiles with richer finishing and elegant details. The dial follows with a wonderfully honest presentation: applied Arabic numerals, original patina, and a large sector small seconds register that gives the layout a balanced, purposeful quality.

Inside is Elgin's high-grade American-made Caliber 556, 21 jewels, with perlage on the plates and striping on the bridges. It winds, sets, and runs strongly with a clean appearance that suggests a relatively recent service, though the exact history is unknown. The caseback is by Star Watch Case Co. and carries the period family inscription BUDD 1949 Mom and Dad, a small record of the moment this watch entered someone's life and a detail that is genuinely difficult to find on a watch presenting this well.

The watch comes on a period Hadley expansion bracelet, 12K gold-filled top with steel back, believed original to the watch and still springy and clean with normal surface marks. The dial shows even, attractive patina with clear printing. The hands show light wear. The crystal has use scratches. The gold-filled case presents well with typical small nicks but retains crisp ribbing throughout.
