Helbros - Day-Date - Smoked Gold Dial - Elgin Era, Early 1970s

At the center of this Helbros, the dial is bright gold. It darkens through amber and tobacco toward the edge, a smoked finish that makes the face appear lit from beneath the crystal. The broad cushion case carries that color outward in straight brushed grain, then breaks at each corner into a polished facet. A  gold-tone expansion bracelet completes the shape. It is a watch that wears its decade openly: warm, angular, and built to occupy the wrist.

Helbros had been selling watches to Americans for nearly sixty years when this one was made. The company was founded in 1913 by the Helbein brothers, its name shortened from Helbein Brothers, and built an American business around Swiss-made watches. Elgin acquired the company in 1963, and Helbros catalogs from the early 1970s still carried the Elgin name. This watch comes from that later chapter, after Helbros had been folded into Elgin but while its own name remained on the dial.

Applied rectangular markers sit against the darkened outer dial, each framed in gold with a black center. The faceted hands repeat their shape, while a slender gold seconds hand reaches the white minute track. At three, the white day-and-date aperture cuts cleanly through the tobacco-brown edge. The small Helbros emblem and name sit at twelve, with 17 JEWELS printed above six. The dial carriers some spotting, and the domed crystal light scratches but displays the dial beautifully.

The case is gold-toned base metal with a stainless steel back. Its broad upper surface retains straight vertical brushing, while the corners and sides were polished to catch the light. Decades of wear have worn through the gold finish along the case flanks, lower edges, corners, and portions of the crown, exposing the metal beneath. Fine scratches cross the bezel and bracelet, but the original planes and contrast between the brushed top and polished facets remain visible.

Inside, the caseback is stamped HELBROS 1137 SWISS. The movement is signed Helbros, seventeen jewels, and Swiss, with RAX marked beneath the balance. It is the Swiss-lever version of Ronda’s caliber 1137, a hand-wound movement introduced around 1970 with center seconds and a full day-and-date calendar. The watch runs, and its service history is unknown.
