Buy in Person — Los AngelesAbout This Watch
Offered here is a Gruen Precision wristwatch dating to approximately 1946 to 1948, a period when Gruen was producing some of its most refined dress watches for the post-war market. This was the moment design shifted away from pre-war ornamentation toward cleaner, more modern forms, but without losing the warmth and elegance that makes mid-century watches so wearable today.
The dial is a soft cream tone with applied gilt Arabic numerals at 12, 3, and 9, triangular hour markers, and a recessed sub-seconds register at six o'clock. The layout is balanced and restrained, with excellent negative space and a subtle warmth that comes from decades of natural aging rather than restoration. Printing remains crisp and well aligned, with no signs of repainting.
The watch is fitted with gold-tone lance hands, a classic mid-century hand style characterized by their elongated, tapering profile and sharp points. These hands were favored in the 1940s for their legibility and elegance, and here they complement the dial perfectly without overpowering it. The small seconds hand matches in tone and proportion, reinforcing the cohesive design.
Inside is a Gruen Precision manual-wind movement, Caliber 422, signed Gruen Watch Co. Swiss, seventeen jewels. The bridge layout and finishing are consistent with Gruen's higher-grade post-war movements, produced during the period when Gruen relied on well-made Swiss ebauches finished to their specifications. The movement winds, sets, and runs.
The case is 10K gold-filled, stamped inside the caseback Cased and Timed by Gruen Watch Co. with Guildite back, a construction Gruen used extensively in the 1940s. The case design with its rounded profile and sculpted lugs aligns closely with known Gruen Precision models from the immediate post-war years, supporting the 1946 to 1948 dating. Case wear is consistent with age and visible in the photographs, with no evidence of heavy polishing.
The watch is fitted on a brown leather strap that suits the presentation well. The strap has a small tear near one lug and will need replacing in time, though it is secure and presents no risk of coming off.
This is a thoughtful, well-proportioned example of a mid-century Gruen Precision, representing the brand at a time when it was known for producing elegant, wearable watches with real mechanical quality rather than novelty or excess. It is the kind of piece that rewards close inspection and daily wear.
Terms: Please review all photos carefully as they are a part of the listing. This is a vintage timepiece. Accuracy, power reserve, and water resistance are not guaranteed. Vintage watches may require periodic service. Performance can vary with wear, temperature, and position.
