Buy in Person — Los AngelesAbout This Watch
Offered here is a 1939 Gruen Curvex wristwatch, one of the most distinctive and influential American watch designs of the pre-war era. Introduced during a period when watchmaking was still largely constrained by flat movements and rigid cases, the Curvex stood apart immediately. Its curved movement and matching case were engineered to follow the natural contour of the wrist, improving comfort while allowing the watch to sit lower and more elegantly than its contemporaries. It was a technical solution presented as design, and it remains instantly recognizable nearly a century later.
This watch features a warm salmon-orange dial, a color seen far less often than silver or cream on Curvex models and one that has become increasingly sought after by collectors. The dial has glossy black Arabic numerals, a recessed sub-seconds register at six o'clock, and a clean railroad minute track that frames the layout without crowding it. Blued steel hands provide sharp contrast against the dial and remain well matched to the period. The overall presentation is balanced and legible, with a warmth and character that feels unmistakably pre-war rather than decorative or flashy.
Inside is a manual-wind 17-jewel Gruen Curvex movement, correctly signed and purpose-built for the curved case. Unlike standard rectangular watches of the era that simply housed flat movements in shaped cases, the Curvex movement itself is arched, a genuine engineering achievement for the time. This design allowed Gruen to produce a watch that wore comfortably while maintaining structural integrity and reliability. The movement winds, sets, and runs.
The case is stamped Cased and Timed in U.S.A. / The Gruen Watch Co., with a 10K gold-filled bezel and stainless steel back, consistent with Curvex production from this period. Case wear is honest and appropriate for age, with no attempt made to over-polish or erase its history. The curved profile remains strong and visually striking, especially when viewed from the side, where the design intent of the Curvex is most apparent.
The watch is fitted with its original Speidel bracelet, a respected American bracelet maker whose designs were widely worn throughout the mid-20th century. The bracelet suits the watch well, both visually and historically, and reinforces its period character without feeling like a modern addition.
The Curvex occupies a special place in watch history not because it was rare in its day, but because it was genuinely different. It represents a moment when American-Swiss watchmaking pushed beyond convention, solving real design challenges with creativity and technical confidence. Examples with uncommon dial colors like this one capture that spirit especially well.
