About This Watch

A faceted rectangular Art Deco case in silver tone with angled octagonal corners, fine vertical line engraving across the exterior, and geometric border work along each edge. The case is stamped inside ILLINOIS WATCH CASE CO. / ELGIN / SPARTAN / serial 2592478. Illinois Watch Case Company cases are among the most sought after by American horology collectors, representing the top tier of domestic case production in the interwar period, and finding one on a Spartan in this form and condition is not common. At the base sits a deep blue cabochon release, which when pressed triggers the hinge and allows the case to open.

When it opens, the interior glows with a gold washed perlage surface, circular graining shimmering beneath the gilt finish in warm contrast to the cooler silver exterior. The watch sits elevated on two small ball feet, which allow it to stand as a miniature desk clock. A loop attachment at the base means it could equally be worn as a pendant. Between the wars this format was carried by both men and women, a personal timepiece that was as much an object as it was a watch.

The dial is silvered Art Deco with a guilloché center panel, gold Arabic numerals, original lume on the hands, and blued cathedral hands. The watch winds and sets correctly and is running at time of listing.

Terms: Please review all photos carefully as they are a part of the listing. This is a vintage timepiece. Accuracy, power reserve, and water resistance are not guaranteed. Vintage watches may require periodic service. Performance can vary with wear, temperature, and position.

I am happy to service any unserviced watch listed on the site, please inquire about service charges when purchasing.
