About This Watch

In 1972, American consumer design was still deep in the Space Age. NASA had landed men on the moon three years earlier and the cultural impact had not worn off. Watch design reflected it directly: large cases, bold dials, names borrowed from aviation and aerospace, colors that had no place in the conservative watchmaking of the previous decade. The Bulova President sat at the top of that lineup. Bulova's own advertising for the President line described it as taking four long years to create, with every 23-jewel movement so polished and so perfect you could wear the watch inside out with pride. It was Bulova's flagship, and the 23-jewel movement that powered it was the highest jewel count in their production.

This 1972 example carries a dial with a fine vertical brushed texture that radiates outward from center, warm champagne at the middle deepening to a richer peach tone toward the outer chapter ring, the two tones giving the dial a depth and warmth that shifts as the light moves across it. The applied baton indices carry orange tritium inserts that have aged to the warm amber tone collectors look for. The day-date window sits at three o'clock. The case is a large round form with a flat electroplated gold bezel and the 23-jewel Bulova automatic movement is visible through the open caseback. The caseback is stamped BULOVA / N2 / ELECTROPLATE GOLD BEZEL / J377218, with N2 being Bulova's confirmed date code for 1972. The watch is fitted on its period expansion bracelet with a fine crosshatch basketweave pattern stamped USA on each link.

One lug is bent. The electroplate shows wear throughout the case consistent with fifty years of age and use. The dial carries scratches consistent with age. The watch is running and keeping good time. Service history is unknown.
