About This Watch

This Bovet Frères chronograph was produced on the eve of the Second World War. In the late 1930s, as Europe moved steadily toward war, the watchmakers of Fleurier were doing what they had always done: finishing movements with a care and intentionality that the world beyond Switzerland rarely matched.

This black lacquer dial combines two distinct construction techniques, which is precisely why it ages the way it does. The outer chapter ring, large Arabic numerals, telemeter scale, and subdial rings are gilt, meaning they are not printed at all but are the result of copper applied beneath the lacquer, which over decades has burned through to produce the deep copper-orange tone you see here, shifting between warm amber and bronzed gold depending on how the light finds it. You are seeing the metal itself. The inner track printing behind the subdials and the Bovet signature at center are true copper foil, a different process entirely, and because foil and gilt respond to time differently, the dial has developed its own internal variation, with more pronounced warmth on one side than the other and subtle tonal differences between the two techniques that reveal themselves in changing light. It is the kind of natural patina that takes a lifetime to accumulate, and it cannot be replicated.

The original lume appears to have survived on the hands, still present after more than eighty years, lending a warmth that no restoration could replicate. The Bovet signature sits at the center of the dial in flowing cursive script, and that signature does not appear once on this watch, it appears three times.

Bovet was founded by Édouard Bovet in Fleurier in 1822, and the firm spent a century earning the kind of reputation that could not be manufactured. They supplied the imperial court of China and won the praise of the Qing Dynasty's most discerning collectors. They became so synonymous with fine watchmaking that the word for watch in certain Chinese dialects derived directly from their name. Bovet's own heritage materials describe the Bovet Frères era as the house's Golden Age, and this chronograph belongs to that world. It is a purposeful, beautifully made instrument with the kind of period detail that is increasingly difficult to find intact.

The movement inside is the Landeron Caliber 50, an uncommon 17-jewel cam-switching chronograph from the same early family of Landeron calibers that produced the legendary Cal. 47. It sits at the beginning of Landeron's chronograph lineage, well before the mass-produced Landeron 48 came to dominate the market with over 3.5 million units built across decades. The upper pusher at two o'clock starts the chronograph and the lower pusher at four o'clock stops and resets it. The chronograph bridge is signed Bovet Frères. The movement has been fully serviced and starts, stops, and resets as it should.

The outer caseback is stamped Fond Acier Inoxydable, confirming stainless steel construction, with serial number 338442. The inner caseback is stamped BOVET FRERES & Cie S.A. The rest of the case appears to be base metal plated with copper and then chrome or nickel. The case is clean throughout with no lug damage and no polishing. The surfaces carry the natural marks of a watch that has been worn and lived with, but the case geometry is sharp and the lugs are structurally sound. No redial. No touch-ups. This watch has had nearly ninety years to become what it is.
