Buy in Person — Los AngelesAbout This Watch
The case is a square cushion form with wide architectural lugs that flare outward with real mid-century confidence. The dial has aged to a warm cream, signed BENRUS with three stars above the SELF-WINDING text, its applied gold Arabic numerals set in a flowing generous script. Gold dauphine hands carry the same warm tone throughout, and the center seconds sweeps cleanly across the full minute track.
In 1954, three Romanian immigrant brothers had built Benrus into something worth paying attention to. Oscar, Benjamin, and Ralph Lazarus founded the company in New York City in 1921, supplied the American armed forces through the Second World War, earned Charles Lindbergh's endorsement in the years following his 1927 transatlantic flight, and by 1963 had placed a custom example in John Kennedy's personal collection. Within their own catalog, the Three-Star line was where the company's standards showed most clearly: shock-resistant, water-resistant, and powered by the movements Benrus trusted most.
The movement inside is Model CF 1, caliber ETA 1256: ETA's first-ever self-winding ebauche, introduced in 1950 and produced only through 1954, making this watch a late example of a movement that never had a long run. What distinguishes it mechanically is the bidirectional winding rotor, a springless click-reverser with a double pawl wheel that winds the mainspring in both directions of oscillation. It is the direct ancestor of every automatic movement ETA would go on to make, and it runs with the quiet authority of something that was designed to last. Seventeen jewels. Swiss made. Cased and timed in the USA.
The outer caseback is stamped CASED AND TIMED IN USA / 7/14 / BENRUS / BY THE BENRUS WATCH CO., confirming a July 1954 production date. The inner case reads 10K ROLLED GOLD PLATE BEZEL / STAINLESS STEEL BACK, serial 7328832, and the outer back carries the monogram J·A, a small record of whoever first wore this watch seven decades ago. The movement is signed BENRUS WATCH Co. INC. / SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS / MODEL CF 1 / UNADJUSTED / SWISS. Fitted on a brown croc-embossed leather strap.
The dial shows honest aging, with warm spotting and gentle toning across the surface consistent with its seventy years. The case carries light verdigris at the edges where the gold plate meets the stainless back, typical of RGP construction from this period and a mark of genuine age rather than repair. The watch runs well.
