Buy in Person — Los AngelesAbout This Watch
The cushion case on this Benrus has a quality to it that most mid-century ladies' watches never achieved. The faceted geometric lugs step down in two clean planes to the strap attachment, giving the case a sculptural presence that reads as much more considered than the category usually produced. The champagne dial is original and clean, carrying the Benrus name at the top, with blued steel hands, gold Arabic numerals, and a small seconds subdial at six o'clock. The watch comes on what is likely its original black woven silk cord bracelet with a sliding gold-toned barrel clasp.
Benrus was founded in New York in 1921 by Benjamin Lazarus and his brothers, and by the late 1940s had become one of the most prominent watch brands in the American market. They supplied over one million timepieces to the U.S. military during World War II, and when the war ended brought that same precision standard to civilian dress watches.
The movement is Swiss-made, signed BENRUS WATCH CO, 17 jewels, manual wind. The case is gold filled. The watch is running.
